What a combination! A marketing writer, hypnotist and consultant. As clients attest, it adds a wonderfully powerful perspective to the art and science of direct response copywriting and the challenges of marketing in today's complex world. It's all about building perceived value when you are marketing your company's products and services, and you need a marketing system that delivers! The words matter, the strategies matter, the call to action and the right approach matter as well.
I've been a writer ever since my eighth grade English teacher told me that I couldn't write and that I should learn to hold a hammer instead of a pen. Maybe it's a coincidence that "martel" is French for hammer, as in Charles "The Hammer" Martel, our family ancestral hero in the Battle of Tours way back in 732. Between my nay-saying teacher and my college English professor, who inspired my love for literature and writing, I found my calling... one of them anyway. Yes, I am passionate about writing. I get grouchy if I don't write every day.
I've been a teacher and consultant ever since my time in the US Naval Submarine Service where, at my last duty station in Groton, Connecticut (after my still secret undersea Pacific adventures in the Cold War) I researched, wrote and taught the Submarine Navy's first digital electronics curriculum for sub sailors. At the time, just before the Shah fell, we were teaching Iranian sub sailors as well. I am passionate about teaching and consulting, two overlapping professions, and that led me to a career in the private sector, at Codex/Motorola and at Digital Equipment Corporation. I wrote a 400-page sales training book on networking when Ethernet was brand new and I taught new hire sales people and customers, too, about networking and communications. There's a pattern here!
I formed JMB Marketing after a career that took me around the world teaching sales and marketing people about networking products. I decided to focus on direct marketing and copywriting services to help small businesses do the basics well, thus, Just Marketing Basics was born. I still believe that if you focus on the fundamentals of sound marketing, with an eye on new marketing technology, that most businesses will prosper. The trouble is, most people don't do the fundamental very well.
My passion for writing landed me a 10-year gig as a contributing columnist to the MetroWest Daily News with a monthly column on marketing, which led to my book: How to Create All of the Business You Can Handle!
While at Codex, thanks to the CEO Arthur Carr, I was on a team that conducted a self image psychology program to manufacturing employees with the premise that happier employees were more productive and also had a better attendance record. This led to my fascination with transformational vocabulary and the magical power of using the right words. Although I have lots of experience in the field of persuasion and influence, I have been a certified Consulting Hypnotist since 2010, certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists, headquartered in Merrimack, NH. I was named president of the NGHs MA Commonwealth Chapter where I lead my peers in educational meetings to advance the profession and support fellow hypnotists in the Bay State.
